Example of written response

Here is an example of what we are looking for on the written portion of the test:

Unit 2, Week 1-
Explain the messages that are presented in these passages.  Support your answer with clear text evidence from the passages.

Example of student response:
There was a different message presented in each passage.  In Help, Please! the message was you can’t expect a reward if you do not help.  An example from the passage that supports this is found on page 61 in the fifth paragraph.  The Raccoon, who is trying to pick apples for a baked apple dessert, asks Bear to help her pick a juicy apple from the apple tree.  The Bear says, “I’d be glad to, Raccoon, but I need to save my energy for my long winter nap.”  Later, Bear watched hungrily as Raccoon and Bee ate the delicious baked apple with honey. Bear and the other animals made excuses for not helping, but they still wanted to eat the apple dessert.  If you are not willing to help, you should not expect to get anything.
In Visitors in the Woods, the message was people should resect the animals that live in nature.  In this passage, people were walking on a nature path, enjoying watching a deer and her fawn when a loud family came along.  An example from the text that supports the theme is found on page 67, in the last paragraph.  After telling the loud family to be quiet, Gwen’s father tells the father and son that they are the visitors because it’s the animals that live there.  They should walk quietly to be respectful of the animals.

Calling all parents!

Dear Parents,

Thursday's are tough.  Homework is due, and many, many students haven't completed it.  So, in yet another effort to give the students the opportunity to successfully complete their homework, I've sent home next week's reading log, as well as the Florida Studies Weekly newspaper.  Here is what they need to do by next Thursday:

1.  READ!!- Read AR books, respond in writing about what you read, get your parents initials to verify the time you spent and the quality of your response.  BTW, if you go onto Wonders, students have access to the leveled readers.  They are AR and completely appropriate for the log!  If your child has cheerleading one day, and church on another day, set aside time over the weekend for reading.  A minimum of 100 minutes of reading is due each week, but your child can break up the time as needed.  For example, they can read for 40 minutes one night, and fill in 2 "days" worth of the log.  It's flexible!

2.  Read the Florida Studies weekly, complete the word puzzle, answer the Think and Review questions.  Due Thursday.  On that day, they will take a quiz and are able to USE THEIR NEWSPAPERS AND QUESTIONS TO HELP THEM DURING THE QUIZ!  Cool, huh?

3.  Work on their speech- They will present it to the class on Nov. 7th.

4.  Complete any extra credit that is assigned through the Wonders website.

I promise, I want your child to succeed.  They are developmentally ready for these tasks, yet they need parental support to see them through!  Please oversee your child's progress throughout the week.  I am a working parent, just like you and I know it's tough.  Your support is necessary, and always appreciated!

Respectfully,
Cindy Rodriguez

Speech Contest Reminders

* All students should have turned in their speech topic for approval.  It was due October 24th.

* Speeches should be written and practiced at home.  Information packets went home on October 21st outlining how to write the speech, as well as the judging sheet showing exactly what the speeches are judged on.  Students will need to return the judging sheet on November 7th, the day of the contest.

* Practice makes perfect!  Please time your child while they give their speech.  It should last between 2 and 3 minutes.  Only notecards with a speech outline are allowed during the presentation.  Speeches CANNOT be read!

Good luck, and may the best speech win!!

Interpreting the Remainder

We've spent two days this week working on this skill.  It's often one that give students difficulty!  Students will be bringing home their Math Notebooks tonight.  For homework, I've asked them to review the examples and "cheat sheets" that we've glued in.  Have your child explain why the "Round It, Drop It or Share It Strategy" is appropriate for each word problem.

Essay Clarification

Dear Parents,

The essay was posted on the blog on September 30th. (click here to view it) Students have been reminded and encouraged daily to complete this assignment on time.  Another copy of the entry form was sent out yesterday in case your child lost their original entry form.  The date on the form was adjusted from the onset and students wrote the due date in their agenda books for October 29th.  If you have any further questions or complaints, please email me rather than Mrs. Lynch.

Copy of email sent about reading homework

Dear Parents,

I did a check today to see how students were coming along with the completion of their AR Reading Logs and the results weren't promising!  Of course, the log isn't due until Thursday, but since it went home on Friday, I expected to see logs with at least 2 days completed.  I observed that only 18 students out of approximately 46 were on the right track at this time.  This would be defined as having at least 2 days CORRECTLY and neatly filled out and having a parent's initials on each day that the student read.  Please refer to lynchrodriguez.blogspot.com for the complete set of directions/expectations.

This assignment has taken the place of spelling sentences and vocabulary worksheets, and is intended to improve the reading achievement of my students.

I am hopeful that on Thursday, students will hand in logs indicating:  reading that took place for a minimum of 20 minutes for five days ; the book title; your initials; and the date. The short written response will be neatly written in pencil with correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling.  Please be reminded that this assignment should be done only with AR books!

Thanks in advance for your support with your child's education!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Rodriguez

More AR Reading Log information

Good morning parents!

By now, I'm sure you are saturated with information regarding AR homework.  HOWEVER, I needed to add a couple more things.  Today, 13 students did not turn in a completed AR Reading Log.  As a result, they received the equivalent of 5 O's, since the grades were counted for 5 assignments at 100 points each.  This homework REPLACED spelling sentences and vocabulary worksheets, making it do-able, applicable to the curriculum, and flexible since it went home in advance.  Several students have their logs returned to them today for parent signatures in ink.  Please return those tomorrow.  On the other hand, most students turned in correctly completed AR logs, complete with the required information, as well as parent initials and signatures in ink.  THANK YOU!!!  (I'M SMILING!)  Here are a few more details:
1.  Students are not allowed to use the AR books that they've checked out while taking an AR test.  This was strictly "outlawed" school-wide last year.  Students in fourth grade are ONLY allowed to use the Wonders leveled readers while taking a test in my classroom.  Why?  Because rereading is a comprehension strategy and many of these books are non-fiction and challenging.  The students are encouraged to use the leveled reader to apply the rereading skill in order to locate information and answer the question correctly.
2.  Students should take the AR test on the books that they are logging on their AR reading logs.
3.  Next week, the Reading log has a front and a back.  The front is for Oct. 17-23 and the back is for Oct. 24-30.

I understand some parents are frustrated, and I'm making every attempt to provide you information that is clear and concise.  However, I am more than happy to answer your individual questions.
Mrs. Rodriguez

New Accelerated Reader Homework

Dear Parents,

There is one week left in the first grading period, and the majority of students have not met their requirement for AR.  Students will receive 2 grades for the 9 weeks showing their cumulative AR quiz grade, as well as a grade based on the percentage of their goal that they completed.  For example, if a student's average quiz grade is 65% and they only completed 50% of their goal, they just earned a D and a F that will be factored into their 9 week average.  Not good!  EVERY student is capable of meeting his/her goal, because it is based on their individual reading ability.

I am asking parents to help monitor your child's reading at home.  Starting on Friday, a reading log will be sent home for homework, and should be returned to school the following Thursday.  During this time, students should read for at least 5 days, and record specific information on the sheet, as well complete a short written response related to their reading.  Parents are asked to verify the number of minutes read, and initial the sheet each day that your child read.  Before the form is returned on Thursday, please help your child count the total number of minutes read and sign the bottom of the sheet.  The log will be sent home over the weekend to allow flexibility with completion.  Students should read for a minimum of 20 minutes, five days a week.  Please ensure that your child is reading an AR book.  I am hopeful that increased reading at home will help to improve your child's reading skills and will enable them to meet their AR goal!!

I will enter your child's homework grades like I described with the Florida Studies Weekly.  The log will be worth 100 points x 5, or 500 points.  If your initials are missing and or a day is not completed, 100 fewer points will be entered per day.

Your support with AR, as well as with other homework is always appreciated!  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mrs. Rodriguez

Think Central Update

Thank you to the parents that attended Family Math Night!  I hope that we were able to help you better understand what we're doing everyday and provide you with resources to help your child.

I appreciate that you pointed out that you were not able to view the test questions in Think Central. I had no idea that I had a setting preventing this!  I believe I have corrected this issue, and you can new view the test questions, as well as the standard.  Please let me know if this is not the case!

Florida Studies Procedures

Starting on Monday, the Florida Studies Weekly homework will typically follow a similar pattern:

Monday- Read the entire newspaper and complete the word puzzle
Tuesday- Answer half of the Think and Review questions in COMPLETE sentences on notebook paper.  Question example- Who wrote the state song?   Answer Example- Stephen Foster wrote the state song.  Answers should be written legibly and demonstrate correct capitalization, punctuation and spelling.
Wednesday- Answer the remaining Think and Review questions in complete sentences on the same piece of notebook paper.
Thursday- Return all work.

If the pattern varies,  check your child's agenda book for the instructions, as they should be writing it down.  Just for fun, your child is welcome to complete any other activities found within that week's edition.

The weekly quiz will be given in class.  It usually contains 10 multiple choice questions.  THE QUESTIONS ARE BASICALLY THE SAME AS THE ONES THAT STUDENTS ANSWERED ALREADY ON THE THINK AND REVIEW QUESTIONS!  If they have correctly answered those questions for homework, they should be able to earn an A on the quiz.  ALSO,  STUDENTS ARE PERMITTED TO USE THEIR THINK AND REVIEW QUESTIONS AND THEIR NEWSPAPER DURING THE QUIZ!

Rather than entering 3 grades for the 3 homework assignments, we will enter one score that equals 300 points.  If your child completed all 3 assignments, their score will show 300; if they completed, 2 their score will show 200;  if they completed 1, their score will show 100; if they didn't complete any, their score will show 0.  We will write in their agenda book which assignment(s) they didn't complete.  Keep in mind, a score of 100 out of 300 points is equal to one A and 2 F's.

Please let us know if you have any questions!
