Calling all parents!

Dear Parents,

Thursday's are tough.  Homework is due, and many, many students haven't completed it.  So, in yet another effort to give the students the opportunity to successfully complete their homework, I've sent home next week's reading log, as well as the Florida Studies Weekly newspaper.  Here is what they need to do by next Thursday:

1.  READ!!- Read AR books, respond in writing about what you read, get your parents initials to verify the time you spent and the quality of your response.  BTW, if you go onto Wonders, students have access to the leveled readers.  They are AR and completely appropriate for the log!  If your child has cheerleading one day, and church on another day, set aside time over the weekend for reading.  A minimum of 100 minutes of reading is due each week, but your child can break up the time as needed.  For example, they can read for 40 minutes one night, and fill in 2 "days" worth of the log.  It's flexible!

2.  Read the Florida Studies weekly, complete the word puzzle, answer the Think and Review questions.  Due Thursday.  On that day, they will take a quiz and are able to USE THEIR NEWSPAPERS AND QUESTIONS TO HELP THEM DURING THE QUIZ!  Cool, huh?

3.  Work on their speech- They will present it to the class on Nov. 7th.

4.  Complete any extra credit that is assigned through the Wonders website.

I promise, I want your child to succeed.  They are developmentally ready for these tasks, yet they need parental support to see them through!  Please oversee your child's progress throughout the week.  I am a working parent, just like you and I know it's tough.  Your support is necessary, and always appreciated!

Respectfully,
Cindy Rodriguez

Speech Contest Reminders

* All students should have turned in their speech topic for approval.  It was due October 24th.

* Speeches should be written and practiced at home.  Information packets went home on October 21st outlining how to write the speech, as well as the judging sheet showing exactly what the speeches are judged on.  Students will need to return the judging sheet on November 7th, the day of the contest.

* Practice makes perfect!  Please time your child while they give their speech.  It should last between 2 and 3 minutes.  Only notecards with a speech outline are allowed during the presentation.  Speeches CANNOT be read!

Good luck, and may the best speech win!!

Interpreting the Remainder

We've spent two days this week working on this skill.  It's often one that give students difficulty!  Students will be bringing home their Math Notebooks tonight.  For homework, I've asked them to review the examples and "cheat sheets" that we've glued in.  Have your child explain why the "Round It, Drop It or Share It Strategy" is appropriate for each word problem.

Essay Clarification

Dear Parents,

The essay was posted on the blog on September 30th. (click here to view it) Students have been reminded and encouraged daily to complete this assignment on time.  Another copy of the entry form was sent out yesterday in case your child lost their original entry form.  The date on the form was adjusted from the onset and students wrote the due date in their agenda books for October 29th.  If you have any further questions or complaints, please email me rather than Mrs. Lynch.
