Florida Standards Assessment Preparation

Dear Parents,

We wanted to give you some information about some changes in the ELA class. Beginning Monday, February 2, we will be modifying our Language Arts block to allow time for Florida Standards Assessment preparation. We will continue using Wonders materials, but will also be using other instructional materials until testing is over at the beginning of April. Please check your child's agenda book for major changes to their ELA homework. Even though the reading log homework will be suspended for now, students will still be required to meet their AR goal for this nine weeks. Students need to be present each day, for the entire day, and arrive on time to ensure that they do not miss this important information and practice. If your child arrives after 8:30 AM or leaves before 2:50 PM, they are missing out on academics.

Here are some important testing dates to remember:
  • Tuesday, March 10th - FSA Writing Test
  • Monday, March 30 - April 2 - FSA ELA/Math Testing
With all the new material to cover, it is imperative that students be on their best behavior and prepared for class each day. We want do our best on the test! Your support is appreciated.

Out with FCAT, In with FSA

This year the state of Florida began using new standards, and with that comes a new standardized test.  Instead of the FCAT, students will take the FSA (Florida Standards Assessment) in late March.

Click here for a flyer containing information.  As we learn more about this assessment, we will share it with you.

Next week students will be taking both a Math and Reading practice test.  We will continue to work hard to prepare your children for what lies ahead.

Tutoring starts soon!

After school tutoring will begin February 2nd for students who have the highest priority of need in math and or reading.  If your child was selected, he/she is bringing home the information on bright pink paper today.  The forms need to filled out ALONG with the registration form for Afterschool.  This form is required to be on file in the event your are late in picking up your child and he/she requires supervision at our Afterschool program.  The forms are due by 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21st.  If ALL forms have not been returned by that time, your child's slot will be offered to another student.

Also, some students received orange forms inviting them to the computer lab before school.  Please return that form ASAP if you wish for your child to receive this extra level of support.

Weekly Update 1/12

Hello!

  • Take You Parent To School Day was great!  Thank you to those that came to see what we do every day...hope that Math Quiz wasn't too bad.  You were all good sports about it!
  • It's Celebrate Literacy week.  Refer to the flyer that went home last week, or your child's agenda book, to see the events going on each day.
  • The Book Fair is going on all week.  Students may bring money to purchase books all week.
  • There is no school next Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
  • Students should be working on their Florida Studies Newspapers and Reading Logs throughout the week!
  • We are proud to say that we had the most students meet their AR goal in 4th grade.  We're hoping to continue to hold onto this title in the 3rd nine weeks!  (Mrs. Lynch's homeroom are the classroom champs, but the Lynch/Rodriguez crew are the combined 4th grade winners.)  Encourage your child to read a chapter book each night!
  • We're moving through fractions in Math.  You can see what we've been studying by checking out the blog post below this one.  Students CAN bring home their Math notes!
  • Birthday reminder:  We are happy to help your child celebrate their special day.  Please remember to send in individual treats that can be easily passed out (cookies, cupcakes...not a sheet cake that requires cutting).  It helps us out a lot when the treat is dropped off in the morning!  Thank you for understanding.
